Questions
- Why do basic neuroscience journals rank near the top?
- The NLM files clinical neurology and basic neuroscience under the same discipline, and neuroscience journals attract heavy citation, so they rank highly here alongside the clinical flagships. That reflects citation reach across the whole discipline — not a claim that bench work matters more than clinical research to a practising neurologist.
- Are neurosurgery journals included?
- No. Neurosurgery is a separate NLM discipline with its own list. A journal is ranked in its home field, so a page titled 'top neurology journals' stays true to its name.
- How current is the ranking?
- It is recomputed about once a year over a multi-year citation window, with the calculation date shown beneath the list. A ranking without a date is noise — this one carries its own.

If a journal looks misclassified — the wrong discipline, a missing title, a band that seems off — please tell us at [email protected]. Every report gets an answer, and a confirmed error is corrected at the latest when the ranking is next recomputed.

- The ranking is factual and method-based, computed the same way for every title. Like any method that ranks journals, though, it carries bias and is not a definitive judgement on a journal's quality or relevance — neither an endorsement nor a criticism of any journal or publisher.
